Industry Spotlight: Fighting a “novel” Virus with Supercomputers
This was our 5th SCV CLP Industry Spotlight session.
Presentation: Fighting a “novel” Virus with Supercomputers
SPEAKER: Sreenivas Rangan Sukumar, Distinguished Technologist, Hewlett Packard Enterprise
WEBINAR HELD: Wednesday, October 21, 2020, 6pm PT (Pacific Timezone)
ABSTRACT: This talk is about the convergence of high-performance computing, artificial intelligence and data science to fight a pandemic. We demonstrate faster, accurate and innovative medical insights derived from the use of supercomputers for: (i) creating 3D structures of the “novel” virus from CryoEM microscopes, (ii) synthesizing and filtering through large cheminformatics databases of potential drug molecules using artificial intelligence, (iii) conducting molecular docking simulations to identify candidates that may bind with the 3D structures of the virus, (iv) validating the binding activity using in-silico high-fidelity multi-body physics, and (v) combing through millions of literature-based facts and assay data to construct knowledge graphs that connect-the-dots of evidence to explain/dispute/hypothesize in-silico predictions.
This talk is part of our series of presentations by industry experts at the IEEE Santa Clara Valley Section Corporate Liaison Program (CLP). If you have ideas for future speakers, please email the SCV CLP Chair.
SPEAKER: Rangan Sukumar is a data science and artificial intelligence architect. He is a Distinguished Technologist in the Chief Technology Office at HPE for High Performance Computing and Artificial Intelligence. Prior to that, he was a research scientist and a group leader responsible for knowledge discovery/data science workflows on the world’s fastest supercomputers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He holds a PhD degree from The University of Tennessee and has authored over 70 publications in areas of disparate data collection, organization, processing, integration, fusion, analysis and inference – applied to a wide variety of business problems in drug discovery, autonomous cars/robotics, electric grid modernization and public policy.
