Milestone: Inception of the ARPANET, 1969

Dedication Date: September 16, 2009

The IEEE Milestone program honors significant technical achievements in areas related to electrical engineering and computing. Over 170 milestones have been dedicated since 1977, including five that were dedicated at the Computer History Museum: the Planar Process/Integrated Circuit, SPICE, EEPROM/Flash Memory, and now the Inception of the ARPANET.

CITATION

At 10:30 p.m., 29 October 1969, the first ARPANET message was sent from this UCLA site to the Stanford Research Institute. Based on packet switching and dynamic resource allocation, the sharing of information digitally from this first node of ARPANET launched the Internet revolution.
